Model costing - new results from benchmarking activities

Creating more cost-efficient options for car manufacture

The first results from implementing this benchmarking by PA Perfect Cost Grid® show significant cost variance of up to 60% on a component level between mid-sized (C-segment) cars such as the most recent Hyundai i30, Golf VII and Mercedes A-class. For example, the Hyundai i30 often offers the lowest cost solutions while the Golf VII is close to its Asian challenger, and the Mercedes A-class could benefit from some cost considerations even on its high quality level.

PA Perfect Cost Grid® – the first web-based benchmarking and cost-engineering platform for the automotive industry – gives your purchasing, cost engineering and development staff timely online access to the model costing results they need to develop competitively priced vehicles, achieve significant savings in product costs and minimise investment.

Most recently the Perfect Cost Grid benchmarking team has completed a full teardown, benchmark and costing within the small van segment. For the Daimler Citan, Peugeot Partner and Dacia Dokker the results show cost differences up to 50% across some systems, for example from a comparison of all exterior, and 27% potential difference on average for a vehicle. These results were derived from cost as well as weight reductions ideas.

Benefitting from continuous updates with new models every year

We update this database continuously through our dedicated Benchmark Factory: every year, we purchase new models, strip them down to pieces and calculate the cost of all major parts and systems. After the start with three models in the C-segment in 2013 and the small vans in 2014 range of benchmarked vehicles will increase soon, focusing the teardown on D-segment cars such as Mercedes C-Class and VW Passat.
